Over the years, I've made a lot of my own microphone cables. I developed this method for stripping shielded cable... there may be a better way, but this is how I do it.  I take a pointy thing and pull apart the shield wire (braid)...


then I gather the shield wire (braid)...

and give it a few twists


the "22" hole in the wire stripper works great for the inner wire


I remember when I was - oh - maybe 10, my dad showing me how to tin wire 'cause we were building a flip-flop - and the way I recall him telling me to do it is to touch the soldering iron to the wire and touch the solder to the wire a little back away from it.  As I recall, he said the solder would melt and be drawn to the iron and somehow this would make a particularly nice job of it.  So myth or not, that's the way I've done it ever since.
